Denim fabric: a true emblem

The timeless and iconic denim fabric has spanned the ages with constant, even growing, popularity. From its humble beginnings in the 19th century to its status as a must-have piece of contemporary fashion, denim has found its way into hearts and wardrobes around the world!

Denim fabric is particularly distinguished by its characteristic diagonal lines, which create a pattern that is recognizable among thousands. Its "core" dyed fibers guarantee a deep and uniform color that stands the test of time. This is what distinguishes it from denim fabric. And yes, you may not have known it, but denim fabric has weft (ecru) and warp (usually indigo) threads of different colors. This is what will give it this very particular washed look over time!

Denim fabric’s legendary durability makes it a great choice for designers looking for durable garments, while its versatility makes it affordable for any budget. When used to make jeans, it becomes a super cost-effective sewing project because it can be worn every day, all year long!

Our tips for sewing well with denim fabric

Have you decided to start sewing with denim fabric? Great idea! To successfully complete your project without any difficulty, it is essential to have the right equipment. Here are our recommendations to help you sew denim easily.

1. Choose the right tools:

When sewing denim, it is essential to use the right needle. It is a good idea to go for a denim needle, also known as a universal needle or denim needle. These needles are designed to pierce thick fabrics like denim without breaking. They come in different sizes, so choose one based on the thickness of your fabric.

When it comes to thread, stick to a quality, durable thread like polyester or cotton-polyester thread. These types of thread are stronger and better suited for sewing thick fabrics like denim. Also, make sure to have an extra spool of thread on hand, as sewing jeans can use up more thread than you expect!

2. Prepare your sewing machine:

Before you start sewing your denim fabric, make sure your sewing machine is set up correctly. Adjust the thread tension and stitch length according to the thickness of the denim you are using. For the main seams, go for a sturdy straight stitch, while for the finishing touches, you can use a zigzag stitch for more flexibility.

Also, consider installing a special denim presser foot if your machine allows it. This presser foot has a non-stick sole that makes it easier to pass the fabric under the needle.

3. Adopt good sewing techniques:

When sewing denim, use pins or clips to hold the pieces in place, as the fabric can be difficult to handle due to its thickness. Avoid pulling or forcing the fabric under the needle, as this can cause the needle to break or damage your sewing machine.

For hems and finishes, remember to topstitch the seams to prevent them from fraying. You can also reinforce stress areas, such as pockets or hems, by sewing several times in place.

By following these few tips and using the right equipment, you will be able to sew denim fabric with ease and obtain im-pe-ccable results. So, what are you waiting for to start your sewing project?
